Young Children (Early Treatment)

The timing of orthodontic treatment depends on the individual situation. Most people can benefit from orthodontic treatment at any age. However, there are certain conditions that are better treated at an early age to avoid/minimize future complications. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but an early check-up will allow Dr. Sherman to determine the best time to begin treatment.

Simple interceptive procedures like habit breaking devices, crossbite correction, space maintainers, etc. done at an early age, when indicated, can prevent the development or reduce the severity of future problems. Some treatment relies on growth to be successful and cannot be done after certain age. Dr. Sherman can determine the ideal time to initiate treatment so as to maximize the positive results. Early treatment can regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions and reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth.

If orthodontic treatment is required, but not right away, then the patient is kept under observation by Dr Sherman. There is no charge for these follow-up observation visits.

There are many factors entering into the decision of when to start treatment. An early orthodontic examination allows Dr. Sherman the opportunity to make the most appropriate treatment decision for you or your youngster.
